The castle or fortress was built as a stonghold by Mastino della Scala, within the confines of the ancient walls surrounding the whole Medieval hamlet. For line, structure and condition of conservation it is considered the finest of the surviving castles of the period of the Scaligeri. Downstairs you can see architectonic fragments and structures of different periods: from thje Keep (146 steps) you enjoy a wondefroul view of the town. From the inside staircases of the Keep you can reach the patrol communication trenches. The peninsula of Sirmione leaning from south over the blue waters of Benaco for about 4 km is much frequented for the splendour of its landscapes and for thermal treatments. The poets Catullo and Carducci, charmed by the beauty of these places, decribed them with immortal lines.
